Couple Arrested After 'Keeping Polish Slave in Garden Shed' of Hampshire Mansion for Four Years

03/11/2018

Slavery is an abhorrent scourge on society; something that should have been firmly left in the past. There have been stories about modern slavery, but actual cases seem to be rarely publicised. Sadly, I don't think this is due to a lack of actual cases.

Having effectively subjected the man to false imprisonment for four years, it seems only fair that the Binnings are sentenced to twice that time in prison, with the intention that they serve at least four years assuming time off for good behaviour.

I would also suggest their home is seized and sold, with the proceeds being split between covering the cost of their time in prison, funding charities set up to assist vulnerable 'employees' and, most importantly, providing the victim of this crime with sufficient funds to start a more humane life and build a future for himself.

In this case the man, who was in his 40s, apparently slept on a plastic sun lounger in the shed at the bottom of the garden, was given out-of-date food to eat, used just a fridge and barbecue as his kitchen and had no flushing toilet.

Pritpal Binning, a former lecturer at Southampton University, and her husband Palvinder, who works in software, had been having extensive building work done to their five-bedroom £1.2 million home in Chilworth, a leafy village on the outskirts of Southampton.

GLAA senior investigating officer Tony Byrne said, “First and foremost, we are pleased that the man is now receiving the help and support he so desperately needs."

"There’s a large amount of building work being undertaken which corroborates what victim had said. There’s no sanitary conditions, no toilet, there’s no bedding. It’s poor conditions that that individual had been living in for the last four years.”

He also said, “It’s really important that people get in touch if they believe someone is being exploited. By contacting us, we can ensure that some of the most vulnerable people in society are protected and supported."

Modern slavery must come to an end.
