High Court to Rule if Referendum Vote ‘Void’ after Arron Banks Investigation

26/11/2018

I have been vocalising my belief that the actions of the Vote Leave and Leave .EU campaigns should mean that the 2016 referendum be recognised as being fatally flawed.

There have simply been too many issues and the validity of the vote will forever be subject to criticism. If the UK were to actually leave the EU as a result of the criminally funded campaigns, which were dogged by explicit lies, misinformation and irrelevant xenophobia, students will be taught throughout the coming centuries about how democracy was betrayed.

People who have not yet been born will be incredulous at the ignorance of 21st Century Britain, and look at us with the horrified repulsion many of us might have displayed when looking at the crusades, slavery and the murder of alleged witches.

Even if you are an unapologetic Leave voter, I would hope you can recognise the absurdity of continuing with the UK's exit from the EU without admitting that illegal activity has robbed the 2016 referendum of all credibility.

Many Leave voters have protested that the lies had no bearing on the way they voted, and that the illegal funding of campaigns held no sway on their decision. In their protests, they state that they were n to influenced by Vote Leave or Leave .EU and instead managed to make their own minds up. However, they don't tend to be able to explain what 'facts' they relied upon in making their decision.

I have personally voted in two recent polls on how you would vote in a second referendum. Both were run by pro-Leave groups; both in frustrated response to the Channel 4 poll which showed 54% would now vote Remain. The first was pulled by the organisers when the Remain vote was clearly gaining a greater level of support than the Channel 4 poll. The second was allowed to run its course. The final outcome of this vote, which attracted 255,000 votes (significantly more than the Channel 4 poll), was that 66% would vote Remain.

It seems impossible to understand why the government has not already declared the original vote void. I can only imagine that Theresa May and her cabinet lack the confidence to do what is right. Perhaps they have been sat in 10 Downing Street meetings discussing their hope that the High Court will step in and do what is necessary, saving them the embarrassment of admitting that the Prime Minister has been wrong-footed.

Whatever the case, it is my opinion that at least two-thirds of the country are desperately hoping someone will put a stop to the madness of Brexit.
