If The Police Are 'Fighting A Losing Battle': Bring In The Army!

10/05/2020

Whilst the vast majority of people have continued to adhere to the current restrictions imposed as a result of the pandemic spreading across the globe, it seems there is a growing number of selfish people who seem to be arrogant enough to act as if the restrictions do not apply to them.

Several arms of our emergency services and lifesaving teams were called to rescue two people who had driven from Slough to Swanage, along with a third person, where they then went on a coastal walk. They got cut off near to Old Harry Rocks by the returning tide. One of the trio had managed to get back to Studland and raise the alarm and the other two were rescued by a team that included Police, Coastguard , RNLI, NPAS , South Western Ambulance and the Coastguard Helicopter.

In London, Hackney Police admitted they were fighting a losing battle to deal with people who were trying to make the most of the weather.

There needs to be a zero tolerance policy adopted to dealing with these ignorant individuals.

The Army have been used to fight fires in the past, during firefighters' strikes in the seventies and again in 2002

If the police are unable to get transgressors to move on and comply with the requirements, I don't think we should be reluctant to bring in the Armed Forces (who have been doing an amazing job in the various roles they've undertaken during the crisis) to move people on.

In this glorious weather, I'm sure some of the selfish people in these parks might think a hosing down would be welcome. However, the reality is that being hit by high pressure water jets from the Army's own Green Goddess fire trucks, or appliances borrowed from the Fire Brigade, would not be an enjoyable experience.

We shouldn't have to take on such measures, but we definitely mustn't accept a situation whereby so many people choose to ignore the laws and risk the lives of others.
