It is only in the last few weeks that I have become aware of the term 'incel'.
So, what does it stand for and what does it actually mean?
Incel is the acronym used when discussing the involuntary celibate. That could, theoretically, be people of any sex, of any race or ethnicity, but it isn't. It is, almost exclusively, white, heterosexual men.
These are young men who blame women for their inability to establish sexual relations with them. Their threat is not just against women though. They pose a threat to anyone who they see as sexually active.
The image above is of Elliot Rodger, an incel who murdered 10 people and injured a further 14. He is definitely not the only incel murderer, but he is perhaps one of the most notorious.
When looking at creating a world where women not only are safe, but feel safe, is going to take an awful lot of work. It isn't something that can be achieved overnight.
Right now, mums and dads can work to educate their sons about the need to respect everyone, but especially those who are more vulnerable, especially women.
Right now, men and women can challenge friends who do or say things that raise concern about men who may pose a risk to women.
We do need to make this a safer world.
